DP SWIPCo UK launches new small-scale waste-to-energy solution for the UK market
The UK's Energy from Waste sector continues to evolve, with new technologies being developed to help waste operators respond to rising costs, tighter regulation and the need to recover more value from waste.
One example is the launch of SWIPSo (Small Waste Incineration Plant Solution), a new standardised waste-to-energy plant developed for the UK market by DP CleanTech Ltd, in partnership with waste operators Dauson Environmental Group and Brooke Energy Group.
The launch comes as UK waste operators face increasing financial and operational pressures. Landfill tax has risen from £19 per tonne in the mid-2000s to £130.75 per tonne today, while shrinking landfill capacity, tighter environmental requirements, stricter sorting standards and forthcoming waste tracking frameworks are adding further complexity.
The SWIP regulations, introduced in 2017, were intended to encourage the development of small-scale Energy from Waste facilities processing up to 3 tonnes of non-hazardous waste per hour. However, DP CleanTech says progress has been slow, with the small number of facilities developed to date often proving costly to design and build.
SWIPSo has been designed to address some of these challenges. The turnkey, SWIP-compliant RDF plant is aimed at small and medium-sized waste operators and manages the full waste cycle on a single site, from waste sorting and material recycling through to energy generation and the safe disposal of residues and emissions.
Its standardised design is intended to reduce the amount of site-specific engineering required, simplify permitting and lower the cost and complexity associated with developing a bespoke Energy from Waste facility.
According to DP CleanTech, the technology is based on its experience delivering more than 100 waste-to-energy plants worldwide and can be delivered in around half the time of a bespoke plant. The company has already secured two contracts for SWIPSo, subject to final permitting, with further contracts expected over the next two years.
"Working closely with our partners, we identified the key needs and concerns of operators, and in response built a standardised, fit-for-purpose, full-cycle plant designed for SWIP compliance from the ground up," said Simon Parker, CEO of DP CleanTech Group.
Developments such as SWIPSo highlight the continued focus on finding more efficient and commercially viable ways to recover energy and value from waste.
