Bauer Technologies has been appointed to provide specialist support to GRAHAM for the Belfast Harbour D3 Berth Development, a major marine infrastructure project set to enhance capacity and operational capability at one of the UK’s key logistics hubs.
Commissioned by Belfast Harbour, the project involves the construction of a new combi wall quay structure, using more than 100 driven tubular piles. These piles range from 30 to 40 metres in length and measure 1829mm in diameter.
Bauer Technologies is responsible for delivering relief drilling operations to support the installation of the tubular piles to their required design depths. Working closely with GRAHAM, Bauer has drawn on previous project experience, in-house tooling expertise, and insights gained during a test piling phase in November 2025 to refine its delivery approach.
A key element of the works is the introduction of a newly engineered reaming tool. This has been specifically designed to carry out relief drilling at a slightly larger diameter than the driven piles, improving installation efficiency and helping to reduce potential obstructions during piling operations.
A later phase of the project will involve the installation of 24 dolphin piles, with works carried out from a jack-up barge. This reflects the technical demands of the scheme and the level of marine engineering expertise required throughout.
Commenting on the project, Bauer Technologies Managing Director John Theos said: “We are pleased to be supporting GRAHAM on this important project at Belfast Harbour. Early collaboration has played a key role in refining the delivery approach, allowing lessons learned to be applied effectively on site. It also demonstrates how Bauer draws on its global network to adapt proven solutions, including tooling previously used on projects in Eastern Europe.
The development of the reaming solution shows how targeted engineering can improve efficiency while supporting more sustainable outcomes. It has enabled the project team to retain the original design approach and make the most of existing materials.”
This project highlights Bauer Technologies’ ability to deliver practical, effective solutions in complex marine environments, supporting major infrastructure development while maintaining a strong focus on efficiency, collaboration and sustainable construction.
