A project to update 15 of the Department of Environment (DoE) industry profiles - part of a wider set of 47 - has now been completed, with funding from the Environment Agency, Association of Geotechnical & Geoenvironmental Specialists, and Natural Resources Wales.
The updated profiles are available here: https://claire.co.uk/doe
These 15 profiles build on the original documents, incorporating updated information on contaminant groups, including per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and persistent organic pollutants (POPs). The content is presented through a straightforward, interactive matrix, with each profile also accessible as a dedicated page for more detailed information.
Industry volunteers played an important role in reviewing the profiles. Their input also helped identify additional sources of information on potential contaminants associated with each industry, which are now included with links where available.
While the original scanned PDFs have not been revised, they have been converted into searchable documents and can now be downloaded.
Phase 1 of the project (2024) involved the creation of a prototype online tool working with 5 industry profiles initially. Phase 2 (2025/26) involved updating 10 further profiles, which were selected from the phase 1 industry consultation, where feedback was gathered about which profiles to update.
