World Environment Day

World Environment Day

This year’s World Environment Day highlights an urgent climate issue, especially with its theme of ending plastic pollution. It's clear that transforming how we produce, use, and dispose of plastics is no longer an option, but an overdue need.

The sheer scale of the problem is undeniable. In 2024 alone, over 400 million tonnes of plastic was produced globally, yet less than 10% was recycled, with the vast majority inevitably polluting our environment.[1] Recent studies paint an even starker picture: plastic waste now accounts for 80% of all marine debris, posing significant and often irreversible risks to wildlife and delicate ecosystems[2].

Environmental Services & Solutions Expo (ESS Expo) recognises that addressing this issue requires systematic change driven by cross-sector collaboration, innovation and industry leadership. Tackling environmental challenges calls for integrated solutions that cover the entire value chain - from design and material science to policy reform. As the UK’s premier platform for environmental innovation, ESS Expo is making this happen, by enabling meaningful progress across environmental sustainability.

At its core, ESS promotes a systems-thinking approach to sustainability. It brings together leading organisations and forward-thinking experts to spotlight cutting-edge technologies and innovations that are tackling and redefining resource management.

With strategies in decarbonisation, resource management, circular economy, water management, air quality, and more, ESS unites industry pioneers and eco-driven professionals to collaborate, learn, and inspire one another.

Improving recycling, particularly for plastics, is critical for reducing pollution and World Environment Day is a timely reminder of the importance of collaboration. At ESS Expo we are committed to providing a platform for knowledge exchange, which is essential for driving forward our journey towards a greener and more ecologically balanced planet.
